The Topic: J&B helped the client submit a 500-word open letter to the New York Times Opinion-Writing Contest. The Process: At the start of the project, the J&B team met with the client to brainstorm potential topics for their open letter. After gathering the client’s ideas, J&B shared four potential topics that addressed varying aspects of the client’s interests. Once the client selected their ideal topic, J&B shared a detailed, 3-page outline complete with references to help the client write their first draft. The client then utilized J&B’s outline as a guide while preparing their first draft. After carefully reviewing the client’s draft, J&B prepared final edits and polished the client’s draft. The team also shared an evaluation of the client’s writing strengths and weaknesses throughout the project. Before submitting their open letter, the client reached out to J&B regarding final editing additions, which the team successfully made so that the draft would be ready for submission to the New York Times. Writing Style: The client is a direct, straightforward writer interested in conscientiously addressing their topic. To help the client strengthen their letter, J&B worked with the client on paraphrasing longer, direct quotes to retain only the most important information, creating a connection between their client’s background and interest in their topic, and adding a strong concluding statement to their letter.
