We have a lot of experience with new essay writers. Some of the most frequent concerns we hear from clients are figuring out what to write about, developing a thesis statement, organizing their thoughts, and worrying their writing will not be good enough. We are going to discuss how you can overcome these types of challenges that new essay writers face. 1) What do I write about? This is a common concern we see with our blue program clients. Our clients are excited about prompts and topics, but they have difficulty narrowing their focus. Brainstorming helps you put your thoughts and ideas on paper. The Purdue Writing Lab explains that it helps you come up with multiple ideas when planning your essay. From here, you work on figuring out the main idea you want to write about. Once you determine your main idea, you should develop a good thesis statement. 2) How do I write the thesis statement? When it comes time to develop a thesis or argument, clients just have difficulty developing a strong thesis. Indiana University (2021) says good thesis statements usually include four key attributes, which include selecting a subject that people can disagree with, writing about a subject that can be adequately argued within the parameters (i.e., length, word count) of the essay prompt, expressing one main idea, and being assertive in your conclusions. Incorporating these attributes can help you narrow your focus and develop key points to support your argument. 3) How do I organize my thoughts? As the first concern focused on developing a strong thesis statement, that statement would be worthless if you do not have a good way of organizing your thoughts. Outlining is the best way to help you organize your thoughts and work through the main points you want to discuss. Magher (2020) points out that developing a detailed outline can help you clarify your thoughts and develop your ideas. Once you have a well-formed outline, you are ready to focus on writing your essay. 4) What if my writing is not good enough? Many clients worry their writing will not be good enough or stand out from other writers. It is important to remember that every writing opportunity is a learning and growing experience for new writers. Butcher (2019) says to remember that writing well is a worthwhile skill and that academic and formal writing can help you develop your voice. As you continue to use opportunities to develop your voice and grow as a writer, your writing confidence will get stronger. Another issue we find with new essay writers is formatting. While not typically a concern for clients, it should be a concern for writers. New essay writers tend to write long paragraphs that mix ideas rather than writing short, specific paragraphs that encompass one thought or point. According to Proofed (2021), too long paragraphs can be difficult for an audience to read. The most recommended length for a paragraph is 100-200 words, which is acceptable for most writing assignments. Remember to break up your ideas into brief enough sections that your readers stay engaged in your essay. We hope these questions and tips help you with the foray into essay writing. When you have a good plan for developing and conveying your ideas, you develop a solid process and good habits. Starting these processes and habits early in your essay-writing development will truly help you see essay writing as an enjoyable experience. Additional Sources for New Essay Writers 1.
